Our Big Brother

Many people have asked how our son is doing with the transition from being an only child for almost three and a half years to a big brother. It's been interesting to watch, but both my husband and I have to say that we are very proud of the maturity that he's shown.

That first week was a bit rocky. My husband was home from work all week and playing both Mom & Dad roles to our son. Our son was pretty resistant and testing all of the familiar routines. I was SO nervous for my husband to go back to work the next week, but it actually helped things at home. Our son is definitely a creature of habit and routine, and going back to our "normal" routines with Mom at home taking care of him has been good. For one thing, he had developed a nervous tick of blinking his eyes uncontrollably and that has mostly subsided by now.

Another thing that touches our hearts is how much he really adores his sister. The other night our family was driving somewhere and we heard our son in the back seat next to his sister, singing a song that he made up for her. It was so sweet. He also has to introduce her to everyone who comes over, saying her first, middle and last name. He loves to give her kisses and to try and soothe her when she cries. He often tells us he loves her and thanks God for her when he prays.

Before our daughter was born, we bought several small gifts for our son, wrapped them up, and put them in a basket, which we call, "the Big Brother Basket." As our son is a good helper (getting us diapers, wipes or any other thing I can't reach while I'm nursing) and shows good "Big Brother" behavior, he gets to choose a gift. So far it's been a positive thing and the gifts are mostly all activities that we can do together with him at home (where he has been stuck a lot lately). I'm really proud of the the skills he's developed to take care of himself more (getting his breakfast, picking out his own clothes & getting dressed). He helps out a lot in the kitchen too!

Here are a few photos of our big brother:

Big Brother Gift of the Day: BUBBBLES!

Being a big brother is tiring work! (We actually caught him sleeping like this the other night)

What a great idea--the basket of gifts! With amazing parents such as yourselves, it shows how well J has transitioned. What a sweet story and a sweet son!
